Wig Care Tips

Whether you’re a first-time wig wearer or an experienced enthusiast, taking proper care of your wig is essential for maintaining its longevity, appearance, and comfort.

At Haló, we believe in the power of great wig care, and we’re here to guide you through the best practices to keep your wig looking amazing.

1. Keep Your Wig Clean

Wigs, like natural hair, need cleaning to remove dirt, oils and product build up. For human hair wigs, wash as needed - especially if its exposed to a build up of styling products, oil or sweat.

However, washing too much can cause the hair to dry out. It is not necessary to wash your wig as often as you would your bio hair. Often washing every 1-2 months is fine if there is no major build up of oils, products and dirt.

Signs your wig needs to be washed:

  • Looks or feels greasy (oil build up)
  • Feels dry, “crunchy” (product build up)
  • Looks Dull
  • Tangles and knots easily
  • Heavy, Limp Feel
  • Scalp Irritation
  • Odor

How to wash your wig:

  • Step 1: Detangle the wig gently using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush. Start from the ends and work your way up.
  • Step 2: Fill a basin / run shower with lukewarm water and use a small amount of sulphate free shampoo. Avoid hot water, as it can cause damage.
  • Step 3: Submerge the wig and gently swish / rinse it in the water.
  • Step 4: Rinse with cool water and apply a conditioner (sulphate free) to keep the hair soft.
  • Step 5: Dry the wig according to your preference. Avoid leaving on or near heat such as a radiator. Use heat defence spray if using heat such as a hair dryer to dry. It is best to allow the hair to dry naturally without heat.

    - Frequently deep conditioning the hair can help keep it healthy and lock in moisture. I find using a deep conditioning treatment and leaving overnight works wonders to revive my wigs!

How To Deep Condition:

  • Apply deep conditioner to damp hair after washing.
  • Leave it on for 20-30 minutes (or overnight for extra hydration).
  • Rinse with cool water, then follow up with a leave-in conditioner if needed.

2. Store Your Wig Properly

Storing your wig properly is key to keeping it in good condition. When you’re not wearing your wig, hang it on a wig stand or a mannequin head to maintain its shape. If you’re traveling, keep your wig in a breathable/satin bag to protect it from dust and damage.

3. Detangle Gently

It’s important to handle your wig carefully. Always use a wide-tooth comb or a specially designed wig brush to detangle the hair. Start from the tips and work your way up, being gentle to avoid shedding.

4.Protect from Heat Styling

Always use a heat protectant spray before using hair straighteners, curling irons, or blow dryers to protect the hair from damage.

If you want to curl or straighten your human hair wig, it is best to keep the temperature set to a low or medium setting,

5. Using Sulphate Free Products

Using sulphate-free products is essential for maintaining the longevity and health of your human hair wig. Sulphates, commonly found in regular shampoos, are harsh detergents that can strip away natural oils and moisture from both your wig and scalp. This can leave your wig feeling dry, brittle, and prone to tangling. Since wigs don’t have the natural oils your real hair produces, using sulphate-free products ensures the hair stays nourished, hydrated, and soft. Sulphate-free shampoos help maintain the natural texture and shine of your wig, keeping it looking fresh and vibrant for longer. Plus, it’s gentler on the HD lace and prevents any irritation on your scalp or the delicate lace material, making it the best choice for your wig care routine.

6. Lace Maintenance

If you have a wig with HD lace (like our Haló wigs), it’s important to treat the lace gently. Avoid snagging or pulling on it, as HD lace is more delicate than regular lace. When removing your wig, gently peel it away from your skin, using a lace adhesive remover (if needed). You can also use lace-specific spray to help keep the lace undetectable and clean.

7. Bleached Knots and Single Knots Care

For wigs with bleached knots and single-knotted hairlines (like Haló wigs), these features create a more realistic and seamless hairline. To maintain this natural look, avoid heavy products near the hairline, as product build-up can make knots more visible. Lightly brush or pat down the hairline to keep it looking flawless.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1.Over-Washing Your Wig
It’s easy to over-wash your wig, but remember, washing too frequently can lead to unnecessary wear. Stick to washing your wig when it’s needed, and don’t be afraid to let your wig air out between washes.

2. Sleeping in Your Wig

It’s always best to remove your wig before bed. Sleeping in your wig can cause tangling, frizz, and breakage. If you prefer wearing your wig overnight, consider wrapping it in a satin or silk scarf or bonnet to protect it from friction.

3. Using Regular Hair Products

Avoid using any products meant for natural hair on your wig. Always read the labels to make sure any product used is sulfate free. Stick to sulfate free shampoos, conditioners, and styling products to keep the hair from breaking down or drying out.

Taking care of your wig is easy once you know the basics. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced wig wearer, consistent care is the key to making sure your wig stays looking fresh, natural, and beautiful for as long as possible.

Haló wigs are crafted with HD lace, bleached knots, and single-knotted hairlines, so with proper care, you’ll get a flawless, undetectable look every time.
