Wig / Hair loss Dictionary

🧠 Words You’ve Seen But Didn’t Want to Ask About — Explained Simply

Wigs can feel like a whole new language when you’re starting out. Whether you're navigating hair loss or just curious about switching up your look, here’s a no-nonsense glossary of common wig and hair loss terms so you can shop (and wear) with confidence.

🧢 Cap Construction Terms

Adjustable Straps
Hidden bands inside the cap to tighten or loosen the fit.
All Haló wigs come with these built in.

Closure Wig
A small lace section (usually 4x4 or 5x5 inches) at the crown. You can part within that space only. Easier to maintain.

Combs
Tiny clips sewn into the inside of the cap to help anchor the wig. Optional — many users remove them for comfort.

Full Lace
Lace all the way around the cap. Can be styled in updos, ponytails, and parted anywhere. More versatile, but requires more skill to apply.

Glueless Wig
Designed to stay put without glue. Usually includes elastic bands, silicone tabs, or combs.
Haló beginner caps include silicone ear tabs for a secure fit with no glue needed.

Lace Front
A sheer lace section at the front of the wig that creates the illusion of a natural hairline. Ideal for wearing the hair off your face, as the hair can be parted freely. Most lace front caps have a machine-wefted back.
All Haló wigs are lace front — beginner caps have ear tabs (no glue needed), while our lace front caps have lace-to-ear construction (adhesive recommended).

T-Part Wig
Lace only runs along the middle part and hairline — shaped like a “T.” Pre-parted, can’t be restyled. Often found in budget-friendly wigs.

💇 Hair Terms

Density
Refers to how thick or full the wig is.
130% = Light
150% = Natural/Medium
180% = Full/Glam
200%+ = Super thick

Hair Texture
The pattern of the hair: straight, wavy, curly, coily, etc.

Heat-Friendly Synthetic
Synthetic hair that can be styled with low-heat tools for added flexibility.

Remy Hair
Human hair with cuticles intact and aligned in the same direction — meaning less tangling and smoother movement.
Used in our Haló Premium Range.

Synthetic Hair
Man-made fibres that look like real hair. More affordable, but usually can’t be heat-styled unless labelled as heat-safe.

Virgin Hair
Completely unprocessed human hair. No dyes, no bleach, no perms — the highest quality available.
Used in our Haló Luxury Range.

🧵 Lace Terms

Bleached Knots
Lightens the knots (small black dots) to better blend with your scalp.
Standard on all Haló wigs.

HD Lace
Ultra-thin and soft — gives the most invisible and realistic look.
All Haló wigs are made with HD lace for an undetectable finish.

Pre-Plucked Hairline
The hairline is already thinned to mimic how real hair grows.
All Haló wigs come pre-plucked.

Single Knots
Each hair is tied to the lace one at a time. Smaller, more natural-looking knots.
Used along all Haló hairlines.

Swiss Lace
Still soft and breathable, but slightly thicker than HD. More durable, but a bit more visible.

Transparent Lace
Thin, clear lace that blends into lighter skin tones.

💁 Styling & Wear Terms

Baby Hairs
Soft, short hairs along the hairline that mimic natural edges.

Edge Brush / Comb
A double-sided tool used to style baby hairs or define parts.

Frizz Control Wand
A sleek, mascara-style wand that tames flyaways without making hair greasy. Great for finishing touches.

Hot Comb
A heated tool used to flatten wig tops and define partings.

Lace Melt
Blending the lace into your skin with spray, gel, or adhesive so it vanishes completely.

Scalp Illusion / Scalp Tint
Products applied under or over lace to mimic the look of real scalp.

Sulphate-Free
Sulphates are harsh detergents that strip moisture.
Always use sulphate-free products on Haló wigs to maintain quality.

Texture Spray
Adds volume and grip for an undone, tousled look. Ideal if your wig feels flat or too sleek.

Wax Stick
Soft wax to smooth down frizz and flyaways — especially around the hairline.

Wig Grip Band
A velvet or silicone band worn underneath the wig to prevent slipping. Ideal for glueless styles.

🩺 Hair Loss & Scalp Terms

Alopecia
The medical term for hair loss. Can be patchy (areata), total scalp (totalis), or total body (universalis).

Chemotherapy-Induced Hair Loss
Hair loss caused by chemo drugs. Often temporary but may grow back with a different texture.

Scalp Prosthesis
A medical term for a wig used due to hair loss — often eligible for reimbursement through insurance.

Telogen Effluvium
Temporary hair shedding due to stress, illness, or hormones (like postpartum).

Trichotillomania
A mental health condition involving compulsive hair-pulling — from the scalp, brows, or lashes.
