Wig Styling Tips
Whether you’re new to wearing wigs or you’re a seasoned pro, knowing how to style your wig is key to getting the most out of it.
At Haló Luxury Lace Wigs, we pride ourselves on offering wigs that not only look fabulous but also stand up to all your styling needs. From creating natural, everyday looks to more glam or daring styles, here are some tips that will help you get the perfect finish every time!
1. Start with a Good Foundation: Proper Fit & Prep
Before you even think about styling your wig, ensure it fits well and your base is ready.
For a more secure fit, especially if you’re wearing a glueless wig, try using a wig grip band to prevent slipping.
For adhesives - try using wig tape, hair spray (or both! I use walker tape and voduz trendsetter hair spray)
I tend to stay away from glues due to the build up on the lace but it is up to personal preference.
If you have bio hair, consider wearing a wig cap under your wig, especially if you’re new to wig-wearing, to help keep everything in place and ensure your natural hair is tucked securely (unless you’re trying to blend the wig into your bio hair!)
2. Heat Styling: Treat with Care
Human hair wigs, including our virgin and Remy hair options, can be heat-styled just like your natural hair, but with a little extra care.
Always use low heat settings to prevent damage. High heat can break down the hair over time, making the wig lose its softness and flexibility.
When styling with a straightener or curling wand, make sure to apply a heat protectant spray.
3. Experiment with Texture
For straight wigs, you can add volume by gently teasing the roots with a fine-tooth comb. Just be sure to do it lightly so you don’t damage the hair.
For curly or wavy wigs, avoid brushing through the curls when they’re dry—use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb for a more natural, bouncy look.
Texture sprays are also a great way to enhance volume.
4. Use Baby Hairs for a Natural Finish
Baby hairs can be a game changer when it comes to making your wig look like your own natural hairline.
Some lace front wigs come pre-plucked with baby hairs, but you can also create your own for a more customised look.
The key is to keep it light and fluffy—too much product or excessive styling can make baby hairs look artificial.
5. Customize Your Parting & Volume
With a lace front wig, you have the freedom to create the perfect part, whether you want a sleek side part or a more voluminous centre part.
For full lace wigs, you can part the hair anywhere and even experiment with updos, and ponytails for a different look.
6. Maintain the Integrity of Your Lace
HD lace is delicate and should be treated carefully to preserve its appearance and the realism it provides.
Always handle your wig by the hair instead of the lace to avoid stretching or damaging it.
For the cleanest, most natural look, use a lace wig tape or spray to secure your wig down for a flawless, melt-in look.
If you’re not wearing your wig, always store it on a wig stand or in a wig box to maintain its shape and prevent any damage to the lace.
7. Don’t Forget About Wig Accessories
Wig styling isn’t just about the hair itself—it’s about the accessories you use to complete your look!
Headbands are great for adding a pop of colour and keeping the wig securely in place without adhesive.
If you like braids, consider adding small braids or twists for a unique, textured look.
Scrunchies and different types of hair bobbins can help you create loads of different hairstyles - they’re not just for pony tails and bio hair!
Take advantage of being able to take your hair off and style it on a mannequin head! Look up some simple hair styles on YouTube and practise them without having the extra stress of trying to follow along with sore arms and trying to work backwards while looking in the mirror!
8. Protect Your Wig When Not in Use
When you’re not wearing your wig, make sure to store it properly to keep it looking fresh and prevent tangling.
Keep it on a wig stand or wig mannequin head to help it maintain its shape.
For longer-term storage, place your wig in a wig box and avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or humid areas, as this can affect the texture and colour.
For human hair wigs, regular conditioning and occasional deep conditioning treatments can restore moisture and softness after extended wear.
Always Style with Patience
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced wig wearer, styling takes time and practice. Don’t rush the process—take your time to create the look that suits you best.
